Helen Dieffenbach Lutes, 94,of Mansfield, PA, October 26, 2003 at the Green Home Inc., Wellsboro, PA. She was born January 10, 1909 in Watsontown, PA, the daughter of George & Mary Halfpenny Dieffenbach. Helen earned her B.S. from East Stroudsburg University in 1931, while a member of the Varsity Basketball & Gymnastics teams, and graduated from Penn State University in 1940 with a Masters Degree in Physical Education. That would be the beginning of a teaching career that would span 43 years. Helen began teaching at Roosevelt Jr. High School where she coached Varsity Gymnastics. She then taught 7 years at Williamsport Senior High where she coached many sports. Helen taught over 1600 girls the game of Bowling while teaching in Williamsport. She then took a short break from teaching to serve in the U.S. Navy during WWII from 1942-1946. Following the war, Helen came to Mansfield State College and taught there until 1974. While at Mansfield Helen organized Sports Days for Girls, where they used to travel by train to compete against Penn State, Bucknell, Lock Haven, & Bloomsburg. Competition included Badminton, Bowling, Tennis, Table Tennis, Basketball, & Volleyball. Helen coached the Women’s Varsity Tennis Team and ran the recreation program from 1963-1972. The Mansfield University Women’s Softball field was named in her honor in 1995. Helen has been inducted into Sports Halls of Fame at Williamsport, Mansfield University, & Tioga County. At Mansfield she was recognized for organizing and developing new athletic programs and coaching many sports. Additionally, she formed the Color Guard which performed with the Band. She was also named East Stroudsburg Outstanding Alumni. Helen was also an active member of the First Baptist Church of Mansfield, a 50 year member of Twilight Chapter #475 OES, Delta Kappa Gamma, Past President of the Mansfield 55 Plus Club, a charter member of the BPW, and was instrumental in starting the Mansfield Garden Club in 1960. She was featured in “Who’s Who of American Women” in 1970-71. Helen was the recipient of the Eberly Medal for philanthropy and volunteerism and in 2001 received an Honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters at Mansfield University. She is survived by a brother Fred Dieffenbach of Williamsport, PA, 3 nieces, 1 nephew, and several great nieces & nephews. Walton Lovell, 64, of Covington, PA, died August 23, 2004 at Soldiers & Sailors Memorial Hospital, Wellsboro, PA. He was born August 27, 1939 in Rochester, NY, the son of Lucas & Grace Horton Lovell. Jean M. Losey, 80, of Lawrenceville, PA, died April 23, 2006 at home. She was born February 9, 1926 in Kinzua, PA, the daughter of Theodore & Daisy Hughes Miller. Jean was a retiree of the U.S. Postal Service. She also was a teacher and librarian at Elkland High School and drove school bus for nine years. Jean was a member of Calvary United Methodist Church and the United Methodist Women in Lawrenceville as well as the Stony Fork Rebekah Lodge.
