Gladys Shelman Cummings, 95, formerly of Tioga, died Friday May 5, 2006 at Collins Personal Care Home, Elkland, PA. She was born December 12, 1910 in Jackson Summit, PA, the daughter of Charles & Nancy Gilbert Shelman. Gladys was predeceased by her husband of 64 years, Ralph, on January 2, 1992. They were tenant farmers before purchasing their farm in Tioga Junction in 1940. They raised tobacco for several years to help pay for the farm. Gladys was employed at the Eclipse plant in Elmira during World War II, Mansfield Novelty, Erwinna Motel, Roz Steadman’s Diner (baking pies), Williamson High School as janitor and cook, and Mansfield State College in the housekeeping department. During her employment she also worked the farm with Ralph. They raised laying hens, sold eggs and milked cows. Gladys was a member of the PA Grange in Tioga for 61 years, a member of Calvary United Methodist Church and United Methodist Women in Lawrenceville, and the Republican Women’s Council. She is survived by a daughter, Lola Petersen, daughter & son-in-law, Laurita & Donald Treat, son & daughter-in-law, Marwin & Kathryn Rice Cummings, all of Tioga, PA, 11 grandchildren, 17 great grandchildren, 4 great great grandchildren, many nieces & nephews, including special niece, Avis (Ted) Deats of Lawrenceville. Gladys is also survived by an older sister, Blanche Shelman of Horseheads, NY. In addition to her husband, Gladys was predeceased by a daughter, Waneta Burtch on September 29, 1963, loving “daughter in spirit”, Nola Burtch, son-in-law, Robert Petersen, 2 granddaughters, 1 great grandson, 2 sisters, & 2 brothers. Gladys attended school in Jackson Summit and wanted to go to High School in Millerton, but it was too far to travel daily on horseback. Since Gladys was not able to have the education she wanted so badly it was important for her to have her children receive an education. She told them that she would gladly scrub toilets for the rest of her life in order to pay for their schooling. Gladys was a loving mother & grandmother. She helped raise her grandchildren after Waneta’s passing. Gladys and Ralph were “mom and dad” to a great many students from Millerton, Tioga and Lawrenceville during their tenure at Williamson High School. Gladys took pride in working hard for everything she had and in always looking her best. Her everyday dress typically included high heel shoes, as she was quite a lady. Barbara Clark Chamberlain, 45, of Surfside Beach, SC, formerly of Mansfield, PA, passed away January 1, 2007 after a courageous battle with cancer in Little Rock, AR, while undergoing further treatments. She was born May 13, 1961 in North Tarrytown, NY, the daughter of David and Nancy Clark. Barbara graduated from Mansfield High School in 1979 and Williamsport Area Community College in 1981. She and her husband, Le, co-owned Chamberlain Transportation in Mansfield until they moved to South Carolina. William Clifford Connelly, (Santa Claus), 73, of Mansfield, PA, died August 24, 2007 at the Bath, NY, VA Nursing Home. He was born October 30, 1933 in Candor, NY, the son of Charles & Jessie Lisk Connelly. Bill was raised in Owego, NY, where at the age of 14 he began two life long interests; magic and printing, which would later become his profession. He left school and served in the U.S. Navy aboard the USS Randolph during the Korean War. In 1960 he became involved with his third passion; that of portraying Santa Claus. He graduated from the Charles W. Howard Santa Claus School in Albion, NY and portrayed Santa Claus for 45 years. He was the Jamesway Santa in Ithaca, NY for years. He also did many businesses, organizations, and private parties from Binghamton to Hammondsport, including Ithaca, the Valley & the Elmira areas. Several of his long standing parties were Athens I-R, Elmira St. Business Assoc., & VanScoys. His interest in magic continued over 50 years until his death. He was a former member of the IBM Rings in Binghamton # 79 and Ithaca # 140. Bill was a charter member of the Society of American Magicians Big Flats Assembly # 263. He enjoyed attending the Fellowship of Christian Magicians conventions. Professionally he was a printer working in many print shops in the upstate area. He retired from Steuben ARC in Bath, NY, and Kingdom Co. in Mansfield, PA. In the 1980’s he was a Jewel Tea man in the Towanda, Sayre, & Athens areas. Bill was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Mansfield, PA. He is survived by his wife, the former, Rosalie Waltz, adopted daughter & son-in-law, Mary Nevol & Bill Dickinson of Andover, NY, 2 step daughters & son-in-law, Marie & Randy Davis of Bellefontaine, OH, Rachael Schrader of Dayton, OH, 2 step grandsons, Randall & Justin Davis of Bellefontaine, a sister, Doris Northrup of Owego, NY, many nieces, nephews, & cousins that he loved, and his best friend, Bill Moughan of Sayre, PA. She was born October 16, 1921 in East Troy, PA, the daughter of Paul & Ina Tomlinson Greenough. Marjorie was a retired Nurse from Soldiers & Sailors Memorial Hospital, and spent her life caring for others. She was a devout member of the Church of the New Covenant, Mansfield, and enjoyed sharing her faith. When she said, “God Bless You” she truly meant it. Marjorie loved her garden, and raising German Shepherd dogs. Esther Lucille Stiger Cady, 94, of Mansfield, PA, passed away December 26, 2007 at Carleton Senior Care, Wellsboro, PA. She was born February 26, 1913 on the family farm in Hepburnville, PA, the daughter of Walter & Effie Estella Mosteller Stiger. Their home also served as the Post Office and general store, and at an early age Esther learned to read and write by sorting and delivering mail. She attended the Hepburnville School & Presbyterian Church; graduated from Williamsport High School in 1932; and Mansfield State Teachers College in 1936 with a BS degree in primary & secondary education. She taught in a one room school in Warrensville until 1940 and retired from teaching at R. B. Walter Elementary School in Tioga, PA. Esther married Kenneth Cady of Mansfield in 1938, moving there in 1940 to raise her family and care for her father. Esther was a longtime member of St. James Episcopal Church, the Mansfield Literary Club, the Garden Club, & the Audubon Society. Esther was an avid reader, botanist, & bird watcher. William Franklin Coole of Mansfield, PA, passed away on December 22, 2008. He lived his life as a loving and caring family man, christian, and dedicated professional. He was born on February 19, 1930 to the late Earl and Jessie Dewey Coole of Gaines, PA. Frank was married for 45 years to the former Judith Spendlove McCoy of Canton, PA. He was a member of St. James Episcopal Church, serving as past Senior Warden and member of the Vestry. Frank attended Mansfield University until 1950 before transferring to the University of Pittsburgh to continue his studies. He was later awarded Mansfield University’s Alumni citation award for his outstanding achievements and contributions to society through professional, civic, and philanthropic work. He received his doctor of dental surgery degree from the School of Dentistry at the University of Pittsburgh in 1954. He then served in the US Air Force as a captain in the dental corps. Dr Coole practiced general dentistry in Mansfield starting in 1956 and was past president of the Sixth District Dental Society. He was a member of Friendship Lodge # 247, Free and Accepted Masons. Surviving in addition to his wife are four children and two grandchildren; Mary Catherine Coole of Mansfield, David Coole of Atlanta, Susan Coole of Atlanta, Dr John and Deb Coole of Mansfield and their children, Katie and Sara. Preceded in death by a son, William Orlo, and three brothers, Howard and Richard and John. Family and friends will be received on December 26 from 7-9 PM at Gary W. Esther grew up in Springfield Township, upper Bucks County, PA. She moved to Tioga County in 1958, and spent most of her life helping on the farm. Esther enjoyed raking hay, mowing lawn, & tending her flower and vegetable gardens. She was a member of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, Wellsboro.
