Dr. Margaretta M. Bone, 93, formerly of Mansfield, PA, January 5, 2003 at Broad Acres Nursing Home, Wellsboro, PA. She was born December 21, 1909 in Forty-Fort, PA, the daughter of Harry & Margaret Yeager Bone. Margaretta was a 1926 graduate of Towanda High School. She earned a B.S. Degree from Bloomsburg University, a Masters degree from Penn State University & a Doctorate from New York University. She attended special summer sessions at Vassar College to study types of Nursery Schools and at Sarah Lawrence College to study trends in liberal arts. Margaretta began teaching in the Forty-Fort Public School. She then became principal at the College Heights Elementary School, State College, PA, and was also a Demonstration and Critic teacher at Penn State University. At Mansfield she has been a supervisor of first grade and kindergarten and an instructor in education. In 1952 she was among the first to be made a full Professor. Her special fields were Professional Education, Language Arts, and Child Psychology. She served on the committee which initiated the Graduate Program leading to Masters degrees at Mansfield College. Shortly, all of her work was in graduate studies. She retired in 1970 after serving 27 years at Mansfield, for a total of 39 years in teaching. Margaretta was a member of St. James Episcopal Church, Mansfield. At various times she was active in numerous social & professional societies. G. Sterling Brace, 86, formerly of Welsh Settlement, passed away June 26, 2007 at the home of his daughter. Sterling was born October 29, 1920 in Mansfield, PA. He is the last of 12 children of Harry G. & Lucy Tanner Brace. He was a retired farmer and a member of the Cherry Flats Baptist Church. Sterling is survived by a son, Michael of Newfield, NY, a daughter, Barbara Powlison of Mansfield, PA, 5 grandchildren & numerous great grandchildren. Stephen Thomas Baker, 86, of Covington, PA formerly of Roseville, PA, passed away July 19, 2007 at home. He was born August 11, 1920 in Johnson City, NY, the son of Isaac & Mary Elizabeth Hoffart Baker. Steve was a retiree of Firestone Tire and a WWII Navy Veteran, where he fought in the South Pacific campaign. He was a Civilian Conservation Corp (CCC) member during the Great Depression where he helped build roads in Arizona. An avid fisherman, hunter, and gardener, he had a tremendous appreciation for the great outdoors. His hidden talent with acrylic paints are portrayed in his many beautiful paintings. Steve was a loving man who was of soft spoken nature and kind heart. Nina Mae Baker, after a long fought battle with terminal cancer, passed away at her home surrounded by her loved ones, December 12, 2008. She was born October 9, 1933 in Towanda, PA. Nina was predeceased by her loving husband Stephen Baker with whom she shared close to 50 years of marriage. Those who touched her life were dearly remembered by a continuous stream of all occasion and holiday cards. She cherished her loving children, grandchildren, family and friends. Daughters; Dorene Ackley, Teresa (Henry) Kuznar, Bonnie (Peter) Healy, Mary (Stacy) Bechtel; grandchildren; Stephen Wilcox, Henry, Roxanne and Kevin Kuznar, Sean and Tara Healy, and Gunner Bechtel. Thank You to all the doctors, nurses, care givers and agencies that helped to keep mom at home for the duration of her illness. A special thank you is given to her PCA and friend Kathy Tice. Nina will be remembered for her love of crossword puzzles, solitaire and her frequent twenty-five cent bet on the game. He was born January 27, 1932, in Franklinville, NY, the son of Plynn & Marie Pfitzenmaier Burt. Russell was a retired dairy farmer. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, the former, Helen Tomlinson, a daughter, Margie Hendrickson of St. Petersburg, FL, a son, Bob of Townsend, GA, a sister, June Abreu of Mansfield, PA, 2 sisters-in-law, Janet Burt & Ann Aumick, both of Mansfield, PA, and several nieces & nephews. In addition to his parents, Russell was predeceased by 2 brothers, Robert & Jack, and a sister, Betty Andrews. When I come to the end of the road and the sun has set for me, please don’t sit in a gloom filled room. Why cry for a soul set free. Howard Fredrick Booth, 91, of Flagstaff, AZ, formerly of Blossburg and Lawrenceville, PA, passed away July 27, 2011. He was born December 24, 1919 in Elmira, NY, the son of Thomas & Mary Auld Booth. Howard moved to PA at an early age, attended Arnot Schools, graduated from North Penn High School, and owned and operated Booth’s Department Store in Blossburg for 27 years. He served in the U.S. Army during WWII. Howard was a member of the Blossburg United Methodist Church where he served as Treasurer for 18 years, member of the Blossburg Men’s Century Club where he served several years as President, Trustee of Arbon Cemetery serving as Treasurer for 20 years, member of Ivy Masonic Lodge # 397, Elmira, NY, charter member of the Blossburg Kiwanis Club serving a year as President, member of the Blossburg Odd Fellows Lodge, served on the board of Broad Acres Nursing Home, member of the Tioga Lion’s Club serving eight years as Treasurer, served as chairman of the Tioga Food Pantry, & member of Calvary United Methodist Church in Lawrenceville, PA. Francis L. Blanchard, 91, of Wellsboro, PA, passed away August 24, 2011 at the Green Home, Wellsboro. He was born July 8, 1920, the son of Oliver & Anna Learn Blanchard at the Farmington township farm, settled by the Blanchards in 1850. He attended Elkhorn School & Tioga High School. He served in the Army in the European Theater in WWII and later graduated from Penn State with an Agriculture degree. Francis operated a poultry farm, and worked for the Dept. of Agriculture for 10 years. He was a Farm Loan Appraiser for Equitable Life, Farm Loan Dept. for 16 years. He was a longtime member of Old Stone Methodist Church, Meadville. PA. Francis s survived by his wife, the former, Marie Adriance, of Wellsboro, and a son, Mark, of Pendleton, OR. He is predeceased by his first wife of 45 years, Margaret Reynolds Blanchard.
